Open to new engineering projects

Afonso de Mello

Electrical & software engineer.

I build electronics and the software that runs on them — and the occasional app on the side.

I'm an engineer studying in Leuven, Belgium. Alongside my master's at KU Leuven, I work as an R&D engineer at Tekever — so I get to build real things and keep learning at the same time.

My background is a mix of electronics and software: satellite and drone R&D, Formula Student powertrain and inverters, and a bachelor project where my team built a system to spot and analyze rogue drones. When I get the time, I like to make apps too — probably one of which brought you here.

Education

Where I've studied.

2025 — Present

MSc, Electrical Engineering

KU Leuven · Leuven, Belgium

My current master's, focused on electronics and chip design — where I get deeper into the hardware side of things.

2022 — 2025

BSc, Electrical & Computer Engineering

Instituto Superior Técnico · Lisbon, Portugal

A broad foundation across electronics, computing, and systems — and where my bachelor project on counter-drone systems came from.

2012 — 2022

Baccalauréat Général

Lycée Français Charles Lepierre · Lisbon, Portugal

French secondary education — where I picked up the languages I speak today: Portuguese, French, English, and Spanish.

Work

A few of the things I've worked on.

2025 — Present

R&D Engineer, Electronics & Software

Tekever · Remote

Electrical and computer engineering across advanced aerospace and defense R&D — circuit schematics, firmware, and systems integration on projects including Naucrates (satellite) and ARX (UAS), among others.

2024 — 2025

Powertrain Engineer

FST Lisboa · Formula Student

Worked on powertrain systems and inverters — designed PCBs, fixed motor encoder and battery issues, and used FPGAs to push inverter performance and efficiency.

2022 — 2025

Coordinator, Business Relations

AEIST · Instituto Superior Técnico

Led the business relations team — built partnerships with 100+ companies and managed sponsorships for 20+ events, growing from collaborator to coordinator.

2023

Electrical Engineering Intern

CHETO Machine Tools · Portugal

Assembled CNC IXN 3000 machines destined for SpaceX and Tesla — hands-on electrical engineering, electronics repair, and problem solving.

Before that

A bit of everything

Portugal

Earlier on I did plenty of hands-on jobs — working in garages on cars and engine mechanics, and other odd jobs along the way. Nothing I'll go on about here, but it's where I got comfortable fixing real things on my own.

Projects

A couple of iOS apps I designed and built myself. Tap through for the full story.

Bachelor project · 2025

Counter-Drone System

A camera-based system to detect and analyze rogue drones — confirming and tracking them through computer vision. Built with the Portuguese Air Force, Thales, and Mauser.

Skills

The tools and areas I work across.

Code

C, C++, Python, Assembly, Verilog, MATLAB, R, LaTeX

Hardware

Altium Designer, Autodesk Fusion, PCB design, FPGA, power inverters, circuit schematics

Areas

Embedded & firmware, chip design, integrated circuits, radar & RF, systems integration

Languages

Portuguese (native), English, French, Spanish

Let's build something.

I'm looking for new projects in engineering — hardware, embedded, electronics, full systems. If you have an idea worth solving, get in touch.

Came here because of one of my apps? Would love if you could give me some support.
